Test of captive butterflies shows association between pigment level and flight distance

For monarch butterflies, redder wings are correlated with better flight performance, according to research published July 25 in the open access journal PLoS ONE.

Previous work has shown that monarch coloring is intended to warn their predators about their bitter taste and toxicity, and that migratory butterflies are darker colored than non-migratory ones, suggesting an association between darker color and increased fitness. The current work, led by Andrew Davis of the University of Georgia, provides further evidence for this association. The researchers tested 121 captive monarchs in an apparatus called a tethered flight mill, where they can quantify butterfly flight speed, duration, and distance, and found that those with darker orange wings overall flew longer distances than those with lighter wings.

"Butterfly researchers don't often look closely at color variation between individuals of the same species. The results of this project will pave the way for a new line of inquiry into the significance of butterfly wing color."

Strap-in bindings

This one is seriously fresh. Strap-in snowboard bindings are kind of a mix between the regular strap bindings and step-in bindings, joining together the very best from the two worlds, the velocity of stepping in as well as the versatility and support of the strap bindings. So far you can find two strap-in binding models - the BLK and the WHT (black & white). These new Strap-in bindings were created by Beyondsnow, check them out!

So, what's the main difference between a Strap-in binding by Beyondsnow and a normal strap binding?

The most obvious is the appearance, it looks sort of similar to the combination of a really harmful spider and a bear trap, but that's just me. The primary real distinction is that strap-ins tend to be simpler to get into than usual strap bindings and once you are strapped-in the binding seems different. How different? The feeling may be compared to the feeling of a cap strap, but then all over the foot and not just the toes. The reason for this is the shape of the straps - two (instead of one) straps are coming from the two sides. This increases the ease and it is more ergonomic. The top of the foot is much less pressured compared to ordinary binding so the blood is free to flow through the veins. Therefore a cap-strap feeling is created on the ankle strap.

How do strap-in bindings work?

First the straps lie open alongside the binding. When stepping into the Beyondsnow binding, the straps are placed automatically across the boots through the pressure of the foot by way of a built-in mechanism. Lastly the straps are secured manually. Ride! In case it is not clear you can take a look at the videos on Beyondsnow site. Strap-in were born on the European slopes and people at Beyondsnow are confident they'll supply the next generation of snowboard bindings.

Things hit rock bottom for Jair Jurrjens Sunday afternoon in Washington, as the right-hander gave up nine hits and six runs in just 2.1 innings in Atlanta's 9-2 loss to Washington.

Ryan Zimmerman got things going in the first, as he crushed a home run to right field with Steve Lombardozzi on first to make it a 2-0 game. Michael Morse followed with a single, and scored on a Danny Espinosa double to make it 3-0. Roger Bernadina singled as well, bringing in Espinosa and making it a 4-0 game after the first.

Zimmerman struck again in the third, launching his second home run of the game to make it a 5-0 game in favor of Washington. Morse doubled and scored on a single from Espinosa to up Washington's advantage to 6-0.

Jurrjens left after that, finishing with a line of 2.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, and 0 K.

With runners on first and second against Luis Avilan in the fifth, Sandy Leon doubled home both Morse and Espinosa to up the deficit to 8-0.

The Braves finally got on the board in the sixth against Ross Detwiler, as a passed ball brought in Martin Prado, and a groundout from Freddie Freeman scored Jason Heyward. That made it an 8-2 game.

Washington added one more run in the bottom of the sixth, ending the scoring at 9-2.

Jonny Venters pitched two scoreless innings of relief, which is a very good sign for Atlanta and its bullpen.
