Asana for Android Keeps You Up to Date on Your Projects on the Go

Asana for Android Keeps You Up to Date on Your Projects on the Go Android: Project management and to-do organizer Asana is great for people with multiple projects or who work with others on their to-dos at home or at work. Now the service has unveiled its official Android app that gives you total control over your projects and to-dos, right from your smartphone.

Asana is free, and works just as well with groups at the office as it does with family members organizing a reunion or outing. It's also a great tool just to keep your own to-dos in check. Asana for Android brings the features of the webapp to a smaller screen: You can add, complete, edit, and assign/reassign to-dos, change due dates, add notes, edit recurring to-dos, and more. If you use multiple workspaces?one for your personal to-dos and one for everyone at work, for example?you can search to find items quickly without having to dig for them. You can even comment on your to-dos so everyone else can see.

We mentioned Asana's iOS app when it launched a while back, and back then a common complaint was that the mobile apps were just app-ified version of the mobile page. The iOS app and the Android app are much more robust now, so if you've been waiting for them or left Asana behind because its mobile apps weren't up to snuff (or have been using the unofficial MyAsana app for Android, it might be time for a second look. Asana is completely free for personal use and teams of up to 30 users.

After the human genome project: The human microbiome project

Feb. 28, 2013 ? Earth Day may be more than a month away, but another, more personal, ecosystem has been shown to also be worth protecting -- within our bodies are communities of microbes that affect the behavior of human cells hosting them. These communities, called the "microbiome," is so crucial to our health that some consider it to be a complex "second genome." Understanding the interaction of these microbes among one another and their human hosts has the potential to yield insights into numerous diseases and complex human disorders from obesity to susceptibility to infection.

In a new report appearing in the March 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal, scientists take an important step toward designing a uniform protocol for microbiome research that ensures proper controls and considerations for variations among people. By doing this, future researchers should be able to better assess how what we ingest, whether drugs or food, affects our bodies.

"While historically pre and probiotics have dominated the microbiome landscape, emerging data from numerous labs as to the impact of dietary interventions and antibiotic exposure will play formative roles in tailoring therapy," said Kjersti M. Aagaard, M.D., Ph.D., from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. "We may find that the answers to our most common and prevalent health and disease states lies not in manipulating the human genome, but rather, in utilizing subtle shifts in diet and components of the diet, efficacy trials in prophylactic or preventative antibiotic therapies, and care attention to the over prescription of steroids and antibiotics."

Aagaard and colleagues completed comprehensive body site sampling in healthy 18-40 year old adults, creating an unparalleled reference set of microbiome specimens. Researchers then screened 554 individuals to enroll 300 (149 males, 151 females, mean age 26, mean BMI 24, 20.0 percent racial minority and 10.7 percent Hispanic). Scientists obtained specimens from several body sites to evaluate the longitudinal changes in an individual's microbiome by sampling 279 participants twice (mean 212 days after first sampling, range 30-359), and 100 individuals three times (mean 72 days after second sampling, range 30-224). This sampling strategy yielded 11,174 primary specimens, from which 12,479 DNA samples were submitted to four centers for metagenomic sequencing. This clinical design and well-defined reference cohort has laid a baseline foundation for microbiome research.

"Whether it is yogurt, penicillin, or diet soda, each alters the microbial communities that live within us," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "This pioneering study promises to provide their names and numbers, so that we can understand how diet, disease or drugs affect our internal ecosystem."

Chris Ford: Christchurch's rebirth hampered by National

?On Friday, Christchurch commemorated the second terrible anniversary of the February 2011 earthquake. This second earthquake devastated the city. It's now leading to its rebirth, albeit, one being hampered by National.

In 2011, the National Government endeared itself to the people of Christchurch - so much so that its voters awarded National a plurality of the party votes cast there. A stunning feat in what had been a solidly Labour town for eons.

Christchurch old boy John Key could seemingly do no wrong. Compensation packages, rebuilding plans and financial assistance poured forth. The people of Canterbury were also genuinely grateful for the attention paid to them by its prodigal son.

Cue 2013 and the love affair between Christchurch and the Government is coming unstuck.

Just last week, the people of Christchurch were given the Government's second anniversary present to the city - 19 school closures and mergers, many forced.

To compound the misery for some of these schools, the Government's promises that they if did close it wouldn't be until the end of 2014 were broken. Instead, schools like Manning Intermediate (which had just moved into new buildings two years ago) were told that the last bell would toll for them before the 2013 Christmas holidays.

Hekia Parata's decision was a massive blow to communities still traumatised by the events of two years ago.

On top of that, Gerry Brownlee has become the new Emperor of Christchurch. His imperious style has seen, for example, the return of democracy at Environment Canterbury postponed even further. This means that Canterbury voters won't get any say over their environmental future until 2016. The obstensible reason given by Brownlee and the Government is to maintain the gains made in the organisation's performance since un-elected commissioners were foisted upon that body in 2010. The reality is, though, that big farming wants to continue to have its wicked way over potentially environmentally damaging irrigation schemes.

Another example is the slowness of the rebuild in coming to the most deprived communities. I saw a television report the other night about a family in working class Aranui having to live in cramped, crowded conditions while awaiting an Earthquake Commission pay out. All the while, media and anecdotal reports still abound of unscrupulous landlords jacking up rents and of people living in tents, caravans and cars. Misery is still the lot of many Christchurch residents, a good number of them too poor to afford somewhere decent to live. Meanwhile, the business community applauds the construction of a new CBD while poorer areas await their turn.

All of these factors have seen National's support in Christchurch fall. From what I've heard it hasn't completely collapsed (given the progress being made) but the opposition could be smelling the first signs of a comeback, via the city, in 2014.

And if that's the case, then National might well have lost the love of the city of Christchurch for good.

Rockets hit Aleppo, killing at least 29: monitor

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rockets struck eastern districts of Aleppo, Syria's biggest city, on Friday, killing at least 29 people and trapping a family of 10 in the ruins of their home, activists in the city said.

"There are families buried under the rubble," said an activist called Baraa al-Youssef, speaking by Skype after visiting the scene in his Ard al-Hamra neighborhood.

"Nothing can describe it, it's a horrible sight."

Video footage posted by several activists showed a burning building and people carrying the wounded to cars to be ferried to hospital. It was hard to gauge the scale of the damage in the night-time footage but rubble was clearly visible on the ground.

Rami Abdulrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three explosions shook Aleppo and reported at least 29 people had been killed. Another 150 were wounded, he said, and the final death toll was likely to be higher.

Youssef said 30 houses were destroyed by a single rocket.

On Tuesday activists said at least 20 people were killed when a large missile of the same type as Russian-made Scuds hit the rebel-held district of Jabal Badro.

Facebook to put old, rarely viewed photos into 'cold storage'

If a photo is on Facebook and no one looks at it, was it ever even uploaded?

Poor attempt at a joke aside, there's something with which we need to come to terms: There are a lot of photos on Facebook that just sit around, taking up precious data storage space. The social network can't exactly delete these photos just because no one's looking, but it can store them in a more cost-effective and energy-efficient way.

According to the Oregonian's Mike Rogoway, Facebook's testing moving what he describes as "archival posts that people don?t need every day" into cold storagein the social network's data center inPrineville, Oregon.

As fun as it might be to imagine a gigantic meatlocker full of servers, cold storage refers to a data center in which most of the computers are asleep, with a few keeping watch ? and able to wake the others ? for incoming requests to view older items. Compare that to a hot storage data center in which all the computers are wide-awake and ready to show you the information you request almost instantly. (Of course, the difference in the time it takes to grab something from cold storage versus the time it takes to grab something from hot storage is so slight that a typical user could never even tell the difference. Think second or millisecond delays, rather than anything more dramatic.)

Facebook says, according to Rogoway, that "82 percent of its traffic is focused on just 8 percent of its photos." Given that detail, it's not exactly tough to understand why the company's considering cold storage data centers ? especially since they will cost the social network about a third less than standard data centers, offer eight times more storage, and run five times more energy efficiently.

Monkey-mothering 24-hour chore for Colombian woman

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) ? The tiny night monkey is with Martha Silva 24 hours a day, nestled in a wool pouch inside her coat or beside her while she sleeps. Eight times a day, she feeds milk to the five-inch baby like an attentive mother.

The long hours of monkey mothering don't bother the 54-year-old Colombian woman, she said, because she already raised two children.

"To me there is no difference. You have to look after each the same. When you give them the bottle, you have to make sure they don't choke," said Silva, who works with the neonatal unit of Bogota's Wildlife Reception Center, part of the capital's environment ministry.

Silva, who has children aged 20 and 30, began working at the center west of Bogota in 2000. She has nurtured species ranging from birds to turtles to primates.

"I carry them with me for a couple of months, in general, or the time that is required," she told The Associated Press. Her husband and daughter help her with the household chores and cooking while she is occupied with a baby animal.

Now she is looking after the night monkey, a member of the Aotus genus, which lives in the tropical forests of South America, including Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador. Night monkeys got their name because of their unusual nocturnal habits.

"When I'm working, I make sure he doesn't get out of the little bag I have. If there is sun, I take him out of the sun," she said.

Silva never gives her animal charges names so they don't become seen as pets. In the long term, the center aims to return them to the wild.

Her latest baby, a male night monkey with dark fur, beige brows and large, protruding brown eyes for night vision, arrived at the center on Feb. 4, weighing a scant 100 grams, about a quarter of a pound.

It was brought in by a man who said he found it abandoned on the side of a highway in Colombia's eastern plains near Meta province, said Judith Cardenas, the center's chief biologist. The monkey was about 5 days old when it arrived, and the man said he couldn't bring himself to leave it to die, Cardenas said.

Biologists at the center don't how this baby ended up being orphaned, but they say the mother may have been killed or perhaps the baby strayed off. Cardenas said Amazon-region monkeys are often hunted for meat, for experiments or as pets.

Silva, a pony-tailed woman with nails painted emerald green, made a small bag of brown and black cloth squares to hold the monkey, which is still too young to walk. They sleep together and Silva takes the monkey to the center each day on her bicycle, the baby snug in the wool bag.

Every three hours, the monkey must be fed delactosed milk with vitamins added, Cardenas said. In the wild, adult night monkeys eat leaves, insects and small lizards and frogs.

When he grows up, the monkey will weigh 800 to 900 grams (1.75 to 2 pounds) and stand about 34 centimeters (13.4 inches), Cardenas said, adding that he will look like "a medium-sized teddy bear."

She said this type of primate passes the first three or four months of its life clinging to or hanging from the back of a parent as it swings through the trees. Orphaned, they need a substitute mother, like Silva with her wool bag kept close to her body.

Having substitute mothers for orphaned baby monkeys has been used in other parts of the world and in Colombia in recent years.

The idea, Cardenas said, is to let a baby monkey grow and then place it in a large cage in the center, next to another monkey of the same species. If they accept being in the same cage together, the center and environmentalists will begin a process of trying to introduce them into the Amazon jungle with a monkey group.

"This kind of primate lives in family groups, with a father, mother and children ... They are a bit like us," said veterinarian Claudia Brieva, who coordinates the center's rescue and rehabilitation unit.

She said an older orphaned monkey can't be released alone into the jungle. A baby can be accepted by another family, however, or create its own, she said.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists a dozen types of night monkeys on its Red List of threatened species. Though none is listed as endangered, several are suffering declining populations.

In Colombia, Brieva said, "Their natural habitats are being destroyed by the expansion of the agricultural frontier, by the indiscriminate cutting o the forests and jungle."

Silva says she has raised two other baby monkeys and both of those were freed in different parts of the country. She hasn't heard anything about them since.

"It is like with a child. You are at peace because they are going to be in their natural habitat," she said.

The government has not released a single photo of Chavez since his return from Cuba on Monday, and that has some Venezuelans doubting whether he's in the military hospital. Others insist he is there, just out of sight while undergoing treatment. The banner reads in Spanish "Chavez is not a man, he is a people who advances. We will live and triumph." No one has yet publicly described a visit with Chavez at the hospital, and Bolivian President Evo Morales said on Wednesday that he had met only with relatives and doctors but was unable to see Chavez himself when he visited the hospital. Speaking at the United Nations, Morales said that Chavez "is in a very difficult spot with his health." (AP Photo/Ariana Cubillos)

(AP) ? At Caracas' military hospital, the only outward signs that President Hugo Chavez is a patient inside are the motorcades that come and go and the soldiers standing guard, some of them wearing red berets.

A poster with a large photo of Chavez smiling sits atop the Dr. Carlos Arvelo Military Hospital, but it has been there since long before the socialist leader was admitted upon his return from his latest cancer treatment in Cuba.

Some of the president's supporters shout "Viva Chavez!" and "He's back!" as they drive past the hospital, which this week has become the new center of attention in Chavez's 21-month-long cancer struggle.

The government hasn't released a single photo of Chavez since his arrival in Caracas was announced Monday, and that has some Venezuelans doubting whether he's in the hospital. Others insist he is there, just out of sight while undergoing treatment.

"There, where you see that balcony, the president is there," said Juan Carlos Hernandez, a street vendor who pointed to the ninth floor, where Chavez is said to be staying.

Hernandez, who sells snacks from a stand with a parasol, said he used to work as a military police officer and provided security at the hospital from 2004 to 2006. He said the ninth floor has a special wing with various rooms where important people are typically taken for treatment, including generals and other military officers.

The special wing of the hospital has its own private elevator, Hernandez said. "The patients are more protected because not everybody passes by."

Caravans of SUVs escorted by troops on motorcycles have arrived and left in recent days, carrying officials including Vice President Nicolas Maduro and National Assembly President Diosdado Cabello, who are among the few who say they have seen Chavez at the hospital.

Among the luxury vehicles bringing visitors was a metallic green Bentley, and those stopping by the hospital have reportedly included the president's relatives.

The government hasn't given details of any visits with Chavez at the hospital, and Bolivian President Evo Morales said Wednesday that he had met only with relatives and doctors but was unable to see Chavez himself when he visited the hospital. Speaking at the United Nations, Morales said Chavez "is in a very difficult spot with his health."

The Venezuelan leader has been undergoing cancer treatment in Cuba on and off since June 2011. He has said he has had tumors removed from his pelvic region and has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Throughout the treatments, Chavez has not revealed the type of cancer or the location where tumors have been removed.

He hasn't spoken publicly since before his latest surgery in Cuba, on Dec. 11. The government has recently said that Chavez is undergoing more treatment for his illness but has not specified the sort of treatment.

Hospital employees declined to comment about Chavez, saying only that the floor where the president is being treated is under tight security.

Despite the extra security contingent, the hospital continues to provide medical care to hundreds of other patients every day, including both military personnel and civilians.

When Chavez's return to Caracas was announced Monday, his supporters gathered outside the hospital to celebrate while holding photos of him. But as the days have passed, their numbers have dwindled. Journalists and television cameras at the entrance have become one of the only signs of anything unusual going on.

Juan Bonaire, who works at a bakery across the street, said that apart from the stepped-up security, the area around the hospital looks much the same as always.

Outside the hospital, people put up a banner Thursday with a photo of the president and the slogan: "Chavez is not a man. He is a nation that advances. We will live and triumph."

A Mac User Tries Out Windows 8, Simon Royal, Mac Spectrum

There has been a lot of buzz around Windows 8. About a year ago I was given a half-built PC tower, which I finished off building and gave to my kids. I decided to take advantage of cheap Windows 8 upgrade offer from Microsoft ? but is it an upgrade?

This was a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo tower with 3 GB RAM and originally had an nVidia GeForce 8200GS video card, which I recently swapped out for an AMD Radeon HD 5450 with 1 GB video RAM. It ran Windows XP very nicely. Then I picked up Windows Vista, and despite its bad reputation it ran very well, especially the 64-bit edition.

So how about Windows 8?

Getting Windows 8

Let?s start at the beginning of the whole experience. To qualify for the cheap deal, you need to use the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. You need to run it on the machine you want to upgrade. This verifies that your machine qualifies for the cheap deal and then downloads the files needed. Once downloaded, it gives you the option to save an ISO or create a bootable USB stick, which is what I did.

This process didn?t go smoothly for me. The ?creating files? failed and locked up my machine several times. I had to create a new user and restart the download/creating process for it to work. Making the USB stick took a fair amount of time too ? considering it is only a 2 GB file.

Installation

The installation process was one of the smoothest and quickest I have seen for Windows. It is also fairly unattended. I booted from the USB drive, the installer started, and I was shortly faced by a language option and then a drive partition window. I picked which drive I wanted to install to, formatted it and set the installer. Then I sat back and waited.

15 minutes later. I was being asked for my wireless password ? it had detected and installed drivers for my USB wireless adapter throughout the installation process. I logged in to my network and then set up my colour scheme and user account. That was it.

First Impression

I have used every version of Windows since 3.11 and ? despite being a prominent Mac user ? do keep my fingers in the Windows world. As the tech support for my household, building, setting up, and maintaining Windows machines for other family members keeps me fairly up-to-date.

Windows 8 is a totally different look compared to previous versions. The first thing you will notice (and have heard about) is the new tile system, previously called Metro, that you are greeted with on boot up. This is your main interface, and it takes a bit of getting used to.

Windows 8 Start Screen

Here you will find live tiles that update with new content ? such as news updates, Twitter, and Facebook feeds ? as well as big button shortcuts to your apps. It is a giant full screen Start Menu. If you want access to all your apps, right click on the background, and a bar appears at the bottom with a button saying ?All Apps?, which reveals a long list of software already installed on your computer.

Windows 8 Desktop

Click in the bottom left, and you get back your semi-familiar Windows desktop, but you will notice it has no Start Menu, something that has been there since Windows 95. Hovering your mouse to the left, where the Start Menu used to be, will pop up a thumbnail of your giant full screen tile interface, and clicking will bring it back.

Whilst in desktop mode, you have access to your regular look OS with your taskbar at the bottom. Hovering to the top right you will reveal a slide-out menu. This is where things get odd: This slide-out menu will change depending what screen or app you are in. It will give you Search and Settings amongst a few other items.

That is about it. Once you get your head around this twin interface with a few trusty fixtures and fittings moved or removed, you can start to enjoy and work your way round the new OS.

Colour Scheme

Windows 8 is a very bright and vibrant looking OS. The tile interface is big and bold, and the desktop takes the darker more serious look of Vista and 7 and gives it a more updated bold Windows XP look. This is especially noticeable around window edges and dialogue boxes.

Windows 8 Control Panel

The clean, crisp, semi-transparent rounded boxes and pop-ups of Vista and 7 that used Aero have been flattened, squared, and given a childish look.

Speed

The first thing I noticed was how fast Windows 8 is. It is a rare thing these days that a new version of an OS is faster than previous ones.

Windows 8 System Screen

This machine is no snail. It originally had Windows XP on it, and it was a fast machine for running Windows XP. Then I installed Vista for a more modern look and while it was still pretty fast, Vista is a memory and system resource hog, even on a machine with high specs.

Windows 8 turned this around. It is blisteringly fast. It boots in under 15 seconds, and apps load instantly.

Why Am I Talking About Windows?

You might think this is an odd article for a Mac site, but a lot of Mac users live and work in mixed OS environments. Intel Macs can natively boot Windows, and with Apple dropping perfectly good hardware from its new versions of Mac OS X, Windows might be an option for some.

Microsoft claims the minimum spec for Windows 8 is a 1 GHz Pentium 4 with 1 GB RAM for the 32-bit version (or 2 GB for the 64-bit version) and around 20 GB hard drive space. That covers Windows machines running back to the year 2000. I doubt that it will run amazingly well on hardware that old, but at least it will run.

When Apple introduced the Intel Macs in 2006, it started with 1.83 GHz Core Duo machines maxxing at 2 GB RAM. These won?t run Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion (as these require a Core 2 Duo machine), but these will happily run the latest offering from Microsoft. Even the paltry 1.5 GHz Core Solo Mac mini, which struggles with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, should run Windows 8 fairly well.

Running Windows on your Mac may not be ideal, but it does mean your ?Vintage Mac? (a term used by Apple and MacTracker) can still run a new OS ? even if it is from the competition.

Of course you could dual boot this new version of Windows with Mac OS X Snow Leopard and boot to Windows when there is something unsupported in your version of OS X.

Would I Recommend It?

This is a two-edged question.

Would I recommend Windows 8 over Mac OS X? Never. Mac OS X is slick, fast, intuitive, extremely stable, and a joy to use. Apple may not have overhauled Mac OS X since its inception in 2000, however that doesn?t mean it is old or outdated looking. The minor changes and tweaks have been welcome on an already fantastic OS.

However, if Windows is your thing and you already have a Windows machine, I would recommend it, despite its childish look and funny new interface. I would recommend it purely on its extreme speed.

However, I do fail to see how this will fit in to the corporate world. Windows 8 does not look very professional, and I can see the tile interface getting in the way.

There are a number of hacks online to make the desktop the default you boot to and also bring back the ?old? Start Menu ? this may be something to look at.

After testing out this new offering from Microsoft, I can hand it over to my children, then happily jump back on my Mac and breathe a sigh of relief. Windows 8 might be fast and good, but it?s not for me full time.

NASA's Kepler mission discovers tiny planet system: Smallest planet yet found around a star similar to our sun

Feb. 20, 2013 ? NASA's Kepler mission scientists have discovered a new planetary system that is home to the smallest planet yet found around a star similar to our sun.

The planets are located in a system called Kepler-37, about 210 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The smallest planet, Kepler-37b, is slightly larger than our moon, measuring about one-third the size of Earth. It is smaller than Mercury, which made its detection a challenge.

The moon-size planet and its two companion planets were found by scientists with NASA's Kepler mission, which is designed to find Earth-sized planets in or near the "habitable zone," the region in a planetary system where liquid water might exist on the surface of an orbiting planet. However, while the star in Kepler-37 may be similar to our sun, the system appears quite unlike the solar system in which we live.

Astronomers think Kepler-37b does not have an atmosphere and cannot support life as we know it. The tiny planet almost certainly is rocky in composition. Kepler-37c, the closer neighboring planet, is slightly smaller than Venus, measuring almost three-quarters the size of Earth. Kepler-37d, the farther planet, is twice the size of Earth.

The first exoplanets found to orbit a normal star were giants. As technologies have advanced, smaller and smaller planets have been found, and Kepler has shown that even Earth-size exoplanets are common.

"Even Kepler can only detect such a tiny world around the brightest stars it observes," said Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif. "The fact we've discovered tiny Kepler-37b suggests such little planets are common, and more planetary wonders await as we continue to gather and analyze additional data."

Kepler-37's host star belongs to the same class as our sun, although it is slightly cooler and smaller. All three planets orbit the star at less than the distance Mercury is to the sun, suggesting they are very hot, inhospitable worlds. Kepler-37b orbits every 13 days at less than one-third Mercury's distance from the sun. The estimated surface temperature of this smoldering planet, at more than 800 degrees Fahrenheit (700 degrees Kelvin), would be hot enough to melt the zinc in a penny. Kepler-37c and Kepler-37d, orbit every 21 days and 40 days, respectively.

"We uncovered a planet smaller than any in our solar system orbiting one of the few stars that is both bright and quiet, where signal detection was possible," said Thomas Barclay, Kepler scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute in Sonoma, Calif., and lead author of the new study published in the journal Nature. "This discovery shows close-in planets can be smaller, as well as much larger, than planets orbiting our sun."

The research team used data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, which simultaneously and continuously measures the brightness of more than 150,000 stars every 30 minutes. When a planet candidate transits, or passes, in front of the star from the spacecraft's vantage point, a percentage of light from the star is blocked. This causes a dip in the brightness of the starlight that reveals the transiting planet's size relative to its star.

The size of the star must be known in order to measure the planet's size accurately. To learn more about the properties of the star Kepler-37, scientists examined sound waves generated by the boiling motion beneath the surface of the star. They probed the interior structure of Kepler-37's star just as geologists use seismic waves generated by earthquakes to probe the interior structure of Earth. The science is called asteroseismology.

The sound waves travel into the star and bring information back up to the surface. The waves cause oscillations that Kepler observes as a rapid flickering of the star's brightness. Like bells in a steeple, small stars ring at high tones while larger stars boom in lower tones. The barely discernible, high-frequency oscillations in the brightness of small stars are the most difficult to measure. This is why most objects previously subjected to asteroseismic analysis are larger than the sun.

With the very high precision of the Kepler instrument, astronomers have reached a new milestone. The star Kepler-37, with a radius just three-quarters of the sun, now is the smallest bell in the asteroseismology steeple. The radius of the star is known to three percent accuracy, which translates to exceptional accuracy in the planet's size.

Advice To Improve Your Web Marketing Efforts - Empower Network

With a wide variety of online marketing options out there, be sure to analyze your ability to master the technology involved. The item that is being marketed should be considered, as well as your target audience. Avoid spamming; that is not the way to market effectively. It takes a great deal of knowledge and strategy.

TIP! The lifetime commission in affiliate marketing is becoming quite the elusive creature. These perks are wonderful and should be sought out.

If you generated significant profits, consider requesting more money from your program. If you generate enough sales and use good marketing techniques, the program will do everything it can to keep you working for them and give you a raise.

Like many other businesses, web marketing requires an upfront investment before you see any profit. You can invest your money into your marketing strategy by using it to pay for ad space on other websites. Yahoo!, Google, and Facebook are excellent resources and can be used to produce impressive results.

TIP! Join social networking sites, forums, and email lists devoted to sharing strategies related to affiliate marketing. These communities can be found through an internet forum or group, and are filled with others sharing codes, ideas, any new programs that have brought them success, new graphic ideas and can also help to answer questions that you have.

Disclose your affiliations. The profits available from internet marketing cannot make up for alienating your website?s patrons with duplicity; always be honest with your audience. If you can convince your audience that your affiliate links also have value, they are far more likely to check them out.

Maximize business profits by signing up with affiliate promotion companies. Internet marketing programs tend to be more effective for generating traffic and sales than other more popular advertising strategies such as banner ads. As you begin to choose what affiliate program works for you, make sure you consider the level of your referral bounties, how popular the directory is, and how easy it is to navigate.

TIP! Affiliate marketing businesses need to appear as though they are the vendor themselves. These links need to be unobtrusive.

Use videos and screenshots to make your review even better. This will help draw more customers in to buy your product. Also include as much detail as possible in your review. People often want to see specifics before they?re comfortable buying anything.

Learn as much as possible about your audience. Coordinate what you are selling with what is being advertised. People come to a website to do something in particular. Choose ads that speak directly to your customers.

You should always keep your affiliate marketing efforts positive. Do not use phrases that have negative words. g.

One helpful way to generate sales is to provide user reviews and screenshots to promote your product. When buyers are better informed,, they are more likely to send repeat business to you.

TIP! What better way to use affiliate marketing than to offer your affiliate customers the opportunity to become affiliates themselves? When someone purchases your product, especially a repeat customer, talk with them about becoming an affiliate. Converting one customer into an affiliate can be like multiplying that one sale into hundreds or even thousands of sales.

Make sure that you keep up with all of the latest information that is affecting the industry. If your knowledge isn?t up to date, chances are your competitors who are more up to date will get more business.

It will take time to figure out what kind of advertising is most effective in your market. Some people go for flashier ads, while others may like the understated ads. Before you make a decision on any advertisements, do determine what your target audience will have a preference to.

Having a successful affiliate marketing campaign is not only tied to the sales you make up front, but to the ones you make on the back end also. You should benefit if you send customers to your affiliates end up being repeat business and you are entitled to a commission for that repeat business. Work with companies that offer commission for referred sales.

TIP! Affiliating with niche markets can help you turn a profit. Specialty niches have less competitive keywords, meaning you can rank higher in search results faster, and make mroe money sooner than you would with products that everybody is trying to sell.

Remember that it is better to act on good tips from one or two online marketing books, than it is to know the information in a dozen. It?s necessary to take a bit of a risk at first by investing your time with no guarantee of monetary return. The effort you put into reading multiple books is in fact an effort in stalling. Choose a few good tips, put down the books, and put what you?ve learned into action.

Be forthright and transparent with readers; make it clear that you are in a position to earn money from their purchase. Visitors to your site are likely savvy consumers; resist the temptation to cover up the nature of affiliate links. Customers appreciate honesty, and you can increase the likelihood that they will return?and click on your links?by working to gain their trust.

TIP! You should always do your research before you sign up with a company. If you aren?t able to effectively market the site without excessive effort, then it?s not worth the trouble.

Keeping a broad spectrum of advertising methods can really help you stay ahead of the game. Many people enjoy shopping from the comfort of home. Other customers prefer the feeling of a printed brochure in their hands. Others may need the added incentive of a discount. You will draw a larger audience if you use several venues to advertise your product.

You will lose some customers and have to replace them with others. Send only your most effective emails to get your customers? attention during the first point of contact.

TIP! Examine each affiliate separately to determine which ones are the most profitable, and eliminate any that aren?t generating a decent profit. One thing that you will want to consider is to give your affiliates a review.

Use banners sparingly. This will only serve to make your site look like it is low-quality and scare off users who might think it is pushy and not very professional. Make sure that your site isn?t loaded with banners only, balance out your banners with relevant content and make sure that the banners that are on your site are evenly spaced out.

Following ideas like those above will always lend to attracting the right crowd and pulling in a decent profit. Furthermore, you will learn to personalize your approach as you gain knowledge and expertise within your industry. That is not to say that you should ever neglect the fundamentals or allow your process to become too complicated.

?Over the years, I have found that, for the most part, debtors truly want to pay the money they owe,? Mark says. ?I enjoy finding unique ways to locate and collect money for my clients from debtors who refuse to work with the creditors amicably.? Whether it?s negotiating with a debtor prior to suit, litigating a collection case, or aggressively pursuing the collection of judgments, Mark and his staff take pride in achieving and exceeding their clients? goals and expectations.

One thing creditors should know about collecting in Georgia is that the state has 159 counties, and each county sets its own filing fees. ?Having a knowledgeable collection staff to determine proper venue is a must,? Mark says.

Mark, his wife, Susanna, and their two children live in Woodstock, GA, which is about 25 miles north of Atlanta. When he?s not working, he enjoys participating in all sports. He?s a coach of a traveling baseball team, as well as a school basketball team.

Outside of work, Lazega & Johanson is very involved with charitable work. They call it ?L&J gives back.? Every 60 days they select a new charity to give their time, money or efforts to. They range from donating clothes to homeless shelters, books to libraries, hosting blood drives, serving food at food kitchens, etc. Each year they select an attorney who is in charge of reviewing and selecting the charities they will work with during that year.

The National List thanks Mark for submitting this paper and for giving us the chance to get to know him a little better. You can access the paper at http://www.nationallist.com/white_papers/georgia.

Pregnant teen sues parents in abortion feud

A lawsuit filed by a 16-year-old girl against her parents alleges she is being coerced to have an abortion against her will. KPRC's Courtney Zavala reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

A pregnant Texas 16-year-old has gone to court to avoid having an abortion against her will, according to court documents.

Lawyers with the Texas Center for Defense of Life, a pro-life advocacy group, filed a petition on behalf of the teen plaintiff identified only by her initials in Harris County, Texas district court on Feb. 10. A judge granted a temporary restraining order in the case, according to local NBC affiliate Click2Houston.com.

"We were asking the judge to stop them physically forcing her to have an abortion," the plaintiff?s attorney Stephen Casey told Click2Houston.com. ?They cannot drag her to get an abortion, force an abortion on our client.?

Read more, watch video on Click2Houston.com

The eight-page petition alleges that the plaintiff?s parents, identified as Jeffrey Koen and Denise Watts Koen, attempted to force their daughter to act against her will "by coercing her to have an abortion with both verbal and physical threats and harassment."

The pregnant young woman has lived with her grandparents for the past seven months, the court document states, and is nine weeks pregnant.

After the plaintiff informed her parents that she was pregnant, her mother pushed for the termination of the pregnancy, according to the petition. The plaintiff?s father said that the plaintiff?s "only option was for her to have an abortion," the document states.

The plaintiff?s mother "invited the paternal grandparents to a bar for further discussion, where she suggested that she might slip R.E.K. an abortion pill through deception," according to the petition.

Lawyers argue that the teen has the right to choose to keep her baby under Roe v. Wade, the Supreme court case that legalized abortion.

Dollar trims loss vs. yen amid G-7 confusion - Currencies ...

By William L. Watts and Carla Mozee, MarketWatch

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) ? The U.S. dollar trimmed its loss against the yen Wednesday as investors sorted out the stance by the world?s largest industrialized economies on recent weakness in Japan?s currency.

The ICE dollar index /quotes/zigman/1652083 DXY +0.50% , a gauge of the greenback?s moves against a basket of six major global units, spent much of the session swinging between modest gains and losses. It most recently traded at 80.082, essentially flat from 80.083 in North America late on Tuesday.

Many Europeans still love the euro

The euro remains popular across much of Europe even though it has left many of the region's economies struggling to compete. Here?s why many Europeans shudder at the thought of abandoning the common currency. Photo: Reuters

The WSJ dollar index /quotes/zigman/9625991 XX:BUXX +0.28% , a benchmark for the greenback?s moves against a slightly wider basket of currencies, rose to 71.57 from 71.53.

The dollar initially posted little reaction to data that showed U.S. retail sales rose by 0.1% in January. See: U.S. retail sales inch up 0.1% in January .

After straddling the 93-yen level during Asian trading hours, the dollar /quotes/zigman/4868099/sampled USDJPY -0.4224% fetched ?93.42 Wednesday, down slightly from ?93.56 in New York late Tuesday.

The yen rebounded sharply Tuesday after an unidentified Group of 7 official was quoted in a news report as saying markets had misinterpreted a joint statement issued by finance ministers and central bankers from the world?s largest industrialized countries that make up the G-7. The official said the G-7 was concerned about excessive volatility by the yen and that Japan would be a major focus at a meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers in Moscow Friday and Saturday. See: Confusion reigns over G-7 position on yen .

Before the rebound, the yen sank against other major currencies after a statement from G-7 officials was interpreted as a tacit endorsement of Japanese policies aimed at weakening the yen.

Sebastien Galy, currency strategist at Soci?t? G?n?rale, said the take-away from the G-7 statement remained that policy makers are mostly content to see the yen decline as long as it?s the result of domestic policies aimed at battling deflation.

/conga/story/misc/investing.html 249660

?The subtext for the rather non-eventful G-7 statement is that the consequences of domestic policies for the rest of the world are of limited importance. It justifies the stance taken by the U.S., U.K., Japan or Switzerland, with the last odd man out the euro zone,? Galy said.

The euro /quotes/zigman/4867933/sampled EURUSD -0.8300% traded at $1.3448, compared with $1.3449 late Tuesday.

Strategists said there remains a possibility G-20 officials will voice their opposition to the yen?s recent depreciation ? a factor that aids Japan?s exporters but could hurt competitors from other nations. See blog: Yen?s boon to Japan needn?t be S. Korea?s bane .

However, some analysts said that unless the G-20 pressured Tokyo over the weak yen, the Japanese currency might see further declines.

?It seems logical that Japan will be questioned in the upcoming G-20 meeting this weekend on its moves to weaken the [yen],? said Stan Shamu, a strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne.

?However?it?s all been words and rhetoric? so far, he said. So ?we feel [dollar-yen] still has upside, and buying dips on any disappointment from the G-20 could potentially be a good way to go,? said Shamu.

North Korean nuclear test draws anger, including from China

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted its third nuclear test on Tuesday in defiance of U.N. resolutions, drawing condemnation from around the world, including from its only major ally, China, which summoned the North Korean ambassador to protest.

Pyongyang said the test was an act of self-defense against "U.S. hostility" and threatened stronger steps if necessary.

The test puts pressure on U.S. President Barack Obama on the day of his State of the Union speech and also puts China in a tight spot, since it comes in defiance of Beijing's admonishments to North Korea to avoid escalating tensions.

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting at which its members, including China, "strongly condemned" the test and vowed to start work on appropriate measures in response, the president of the council said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the third of his line to rule the country, has presided over two long-range rocket launches and a nuclear test during his first year in power, pursuing policies that have propelled his impoverished and malnourished country closer to becoming a nuclear weapons power.

North Korea said the test had "greater explosive force" than those it conducted in 2006 and 2009. Its KCNA news agency said it had used a "miniaturized" and lighter nuclear device, indicating it had again used plutonium, which is suitable for use as a missile warhead.

China, which has shown signs of increasing exasperation with the recent bellicose tone of its reclusive neighbor, summoned the North Korean ambassador in Beijing and protested sternly, the Foreign Ministry said.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said China was "strongly dissatisfied and resolutely opposed" to the test and urged North Korea to "stop any rhetoric or acts that could worsen situations and return to the right course of dialogue and consultation as soon as possible".

Analysts said the test was a major embarrassment to China, which is a permanent member of the Security Council and North Korea's sole major economic and diplomatic ally.

Obama called the test a "highly provocative act" that hurt regional stability.

"The danger posed by North Korea's threatening activities warrants further swift and credible action by the international community. The United States will also continue to take steps necessary to defend ourselves and our allies," Obama said.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said Washington and its allies intended to "augment the sanctions regime" already in place due to Pyongyang's previous atomic tests. North Korea is already one of the most heavily sanctioned states in the world and has few external economic links that can be targeted.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the test was a "grave threat" that could not be tolerated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear arms program and return to talks. NATO condemned the test as an "irresponsible act."

South Korea, still technically at war with North Korea after a 1950-53 civil war ended in a mere truce, also denounced the test. Obama spoke to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday and told him the United States "remains steadfast in its defense commitments" to Korea, the White House said.

MAXIMUM RESTRAINT

North Korea's Foreign Ministry said the test was "only the first response we took with maximum restraint".

"If the United States continues to come out with hostility and complicates the situation, we will be forced to take stronger, second and third responses in consecutive steps," it said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

North Korea - which gave the U.S. State Department advance warning of the test - often threatens the United States and its "puppet", South Korea, with destruction in colorful terms.

North Korea told the U.N. disarmament forum in Geneva that it would never bow to resolutions on its nuclear program and that prospects were "gloomy" for the denuclearization of the divided Korean peninsula because of a "hostile" U.S. policy.

Suzanne DiMaggio, an analyst at the Asia Society in New York, said North Korea had embarrassed China with the test. "China's inability to dissuade North Korea from carrying through with this third nuclear test reveals Beijing's limited influence over Pyongyang's actions in unusually stark terms," she said.

Mark Fitzpatrick of the International Institute for Strategic Studies think tank, said: "The test is hugely insulting to China, which now can be expected to follow through with threats to impose sanctions."

The magnitude of the explosion was roughly twice that of the 2009 test, according to the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization. The U.S. Geological Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred.

U.S. intelligence agencies were analyzing the event and found that North Korea probably conducted an underground nuclear explosion with a yield of "approximately several kilotons", the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said.

Nuclear experts have described Pyongyang's previous two tests as puny by international standards. The yield of the 2006 test has been estimated at less than 1 kiloton (1,000 tons of TNT equivalent) and the second at some 2-7 kilotons, compared with 20 kilotons for a Nagasaki-type bomb.

Initial indications are that the test involved the latest version of a plutonium-based prototype weapon, according to one current and one former U.S. national security official. Both previous tests involved plutonium. If it turns out the test was of a new uranium-based weapon, it would show that North Korea has made more progress on uranium enrichment than previously thought.

The United States uses WC-135 Constant Phoenix "sniffer" aircraft to collect samples to identify nuclear explosions. These would need to be deployed quickly to detect whether highly enriched uranium rather than plutonium was used because uranium decays to undetectable levels within a matter of days. Plutonium takes much longer to decay.

North Korea trumpeted news of the test on its state television channel to patriotic music against a backdrop of its national flag.

"It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said.

North Korea linked the test to its technical prowess in launching a long-range rocket in December, a move that triggered the U.N. sanctions, backed by China, that Pyongyang said prompted it to take Tuesday's action.

The North's ultimate aim, Washington believes, is to design an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead that could hit the United States. North Korea says the program is aimed at putting satellites in space.

Despite its three nuclear tests and long-range rocket tests, North Korea is not believed to be close to manufacturing a nuclear missile capable of hitting the United States.

It used plutonium in previous nuclear tests and before Tuesday there had been speculation that it would use highly enriched uranium so as to conserve its plutonium stocks, as testing eats into its limited supply of materials to construct a nuclear bomb.

"VICIOUS CYCLE"

When Kim Jong-un, who is 30, took power after his father's death in December 2011, there were hopes that he would bring reforms and end Kim Jong-il's "military first" policies.

Instead, North Korea, whose economy is smaller than it was 20 years ago and where a third of children are believed to be malnourished, appears to be trapped in a cycle of sanctions followed by further provocations.

"The more North Korea shoots missiles, launches satellites or conducts nuclear tests, the more the U.N. Security Council will impose new and more severe sanctions," said Shen Dingli, a professor at Shanghai's Fudan University. "It is an endless, vicious cycle."

Options for the international community appear to be in short supply. Diplomats at the United Nations said negotiations on new sanctions could take weeks since China is likely to resist tough new measures for fear they could lead to further retaliation by the North Korean leadership.

Beijing has also been concerned that tougher sanctions could further weaken North Korea's economy and prompt a flood of refugees into China.

Tuesday's action appeared to have been timed for the run-up to February 16 anniversary celebrations of Kim Jong-il's birthday, as well as to achieve maximum international attention.

Significantly, the test comes at a time of political transition in China, Japan and South Korea, and as Obama begins his second term. The U.S. president will likely have to tweak his State of the Union address due to be given on Tuesday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is bedding down a new government and South Korea's new president, Park Geun-hye, is preparing to take office on February 25.

China too is in the midst of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition to Xi Jinping, who takes office in March. Both Abe and Xi are staunch nationalists.

The longer-term game plan from Pyongyang may be to restart international talks aimed at winning food and financial aid. China urged it to return to the stalled "six-party" talks on its nuclear program, hosted by China and including the two Koreas, the United States, Japan and Russia.

Its puny economy and small diplomatic reach mean that North Korea struggles to win attention on the global stage - other than through nuclear tests and attacks on South Korea, the last of which was made in 2010.

"Now the next step for North Korea will be to offer talks... - any form to start up discussion again to bring things to their advantage," predicted Jeung Young-tae, senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification in Seoul.
