Adding a '3D print' button to animation software

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Watch out, Barbie: omnivorous beasts are assembling in a 3D printer near you. Tool developed at Harvard turns animated characters into fully articulated action figures.

A group of graphics experts led by computer scientists at Harvard have created an add-on software tool that translates video game characters -- -- or any other three-dimensional animations -- -- into fully articulated action figures, with the help of a 3D printer.

The project is described in detail in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Transactions on Graphics and will be presented at the ACM SIGGRAPH conference on August 7.

Besides its obvious consumer appeal, the tool constitutes a remarkable piece of code and an usual conceptual exploration of the virtual and physical worlds.

"In animation you're not necessarily trying to model the physical world perfectly; the model only has to be good enough to convince your eye," explains lead author Moritz B?cher, a graduate student in computer science at SEAS. "In a virtual world, you have all this freedom that you don't have in the physical world. You can make a character so anatomically skewed that it would never be able to stand up in real life, and you can make deformations that aren't physically possible. You could even have a head that isn't attached to its body, or legs that occasionally intersect each other instead of colliding."

Returning a virtual character to the physical world therefore turns the traditional animation process on its head, in a sort of reverse rendering, as the image that's on the screen must be adapted to accommodate real-world constraints.

B?cher and his coauthors demonstrated their new method using characters from Spore, an evolution-simulation video game. Spore allows players to create a vast range of creatures with numerous limbs, eyes, and body segments in almost any configuration, using a technique called procedural animation to quickly and automatically animate whatever body plan it receives.

As with most types of computer animation, the characters themselves are just "skins" -- meshes of polygons -- that are manipulated like marionettes by an invisible skeleton.

"As an animator, you can move the skeletons and create weight relationships with the surface points," says B?cher, "but the skeletons inside are non-physical with zero-dimensional joints; they're not useful to our fabrication process at all. In fact, the skeleton frequently protrudes outside the body entirely."

B?cher tackled the fabrication problem with his Ph.D. adviser, Hanspeter Pfister, Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at SEAS. They were joined by Bernd Bickel and Doug James at the Technische Universit?t Berlin and Cornell University, respectively.

This team of computer graphics experts developed a software tool that achieves two things: it identifies the ideal locations for the action figure's joints, based on the character's virtual articulation behavior, and then it optimizes the size and location of those joints for the physical world. For instance, a spindly arm might be too thin to hold a robust joint, and the joints in a curving spine might collide with each other if they are too close.

The software uses a series of optimization techniques to generate the best possible model, incorporating both hinges and ball-and-socket joints. It also builds some friction into these surfaces so that the printed figure will be able to hold its poses.

The tool also perfects the model's skin texture. Procedurally animated characters tend to have a very roughly defined, low-resolution skin to enable rendering in real time. Details and textures are typically added through a type of virtual optical illusion: manipulating the normals that determine how light reflects off the surface. In order to have these details show up in the 3D print, the software analyzes that map of normals and translates it into a realistic surface texture.

Then the 3D printer sets to work, and out comes a fully assembled, robust, articulated action figure, bringing the virtual world to life.

"With an animation, you always have to view it on a two-dimensional screen, but this allows you to just print it and take an actual look at it in 3D," says B?cher. "I think that's helpful to the artists and animators, to see how it actually feels in reality and get some feedback. Right now, perhaps they can print a static scene, just a character in one stance, but they can't see how it really moves. If you print one of these articulated figures, you can experiment with different stances and movements in a natural way, as with an artist's mannequin."

B?cher's model does not allow deformations beyond the joints, so squishy, stretchable bodies are not yet captured in this process. But that type of printed character might be possible by incorporating other existing techniques.

For instance, in 2010, Pfister, B?cher, and Bickel were part of a group of researchers who replicated an entire flip-flop sandal using a multi-material 3D printer. The printed sandal mimicked the elasticity of the original foam rubber and cloth. With some more development, a later iteration of the "3D-print button" could include this capability.

"Perhaps in the future someone will invent a 3D printer that prints the body and the electronics in one piece," B?cher muses. "Then you could create the complete animated character at the push of a button and have it run around on your desk."

Harvard's Office of Technology Development has filed a patent application and is working with the Pfister Lab to commercialize the new technology by licensing it to an existing company or by forming a start-up. Their near-term areas of interest include cloud-based services for creating highly customized, user-generated products, such as toys, and enhancing existing animation and 3D printer software with these capabilities.

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation, Pixar, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Russian Cargo Spacecraft Docks With Space Station on 2nd Try

An unmanned Russian cargo ship parked itself at the International Space Station tonight (July 28), in a second attempt to test an updated space docking system, NASA says.

The robotic Russian Progress 47 spacecraft re-docked to the space station to test the new Kurs-NA docking system. The cargo ship safely approached the station and automatically attached itself to the Pirs docking compartment on the Russian segment of the massive orbiting laboratory at 9:01 p.m. EDT (0101 GMT July 29). Russia intends to use the Kurs-NA docking system on future unmanned Progress spacecraft and manned Soyuz vehicles.

The Progress' safe docking followed a failed first attempt four days ago, on July 23, which was aborted after a technical glitch prevented the spacecraft from reaching the orbiting outpost. After that attempt, the Progress 47's onboard computers kept the craft a safe distance away from the station while Russian engineers analyzed the failure.

Today's successful maneuver was a key demonstration of the new Kurs-NA docking system, which is an updated version of the Kurs system that has been integrated into Russian spacecraft for years. Engineers made several upgrades to the newer version, including better electronics that are expected to use less power and improve safety.

As part of the test, the robotic Progress 47 spacecraft approached the station to within about 29 miles (46 kilometers). At this range, the Kurs-NA system was activated, and the cargo ship carefully attached itself to the space station. [Infographic: How Russia's Progress Spaceships Work]

The Progress 47 docking test occurred a day after a different unmanned cargo freighter arrived at the space station. The Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle-3, or HTV-3, was safely attached to the orbiting outpost Friday morning (July 27). The spacecraft is packed with fresh supplies, food and science experiments for the station.

The Progress 47 arrived at the space station in April to deliver clothing, food and other supplies to the astronauts living aboard the space lab. The cargo ship had been attached to the Pirs docking compartment since it first reached the station and completed its prime mission, but was purposefully undocked on July 22 to prepare for the Kurs-NA trial run.

After unloading all the cargo inside the Progress 47, the station crew re-loaded the spacecraft with trash and other unwanted items. Russia's disposable Progress vehicles are intentionally sent to burn up during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere at the end of their missions.

The Progress 47 cargo ship is scheduled to make its final departure from the space station on July 30 at 2:11 p.m. EDT (1811 GMT).

The space station's Expedition 32 crew, led by Russian cosmonaut and station commander Gennady Padalka, monitored today's docking test. There are currently six astronauts living at the orbiting complex, including Padalka, Russian cosmonauts Sergei Revin and Yuri Malenchenko, NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Joe Acaba, and Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide.

The next Russian cargo ship, Progress 48, is slated to launch on Aug. 1 from the BaikonurCosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Rare Diseases: 5 Recent Reasons to Cheer

On Sunday morning, July 21, I faced a room of people from families with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited blindness caused by mutations in any of at least 18 genes. It was the final session of the Foundation for Retinal Research s bi-annual LCA family conference, and I was there to discuss the history of gene therapy. But I zapped through that quickly, because the future is much more intriguing.

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Troy Stevens)

The excitement pervading the room that was palpable, following a day of scientific updates, and not only because those with young children were soon to visit Sesame World and the sights of Philadelphia.

Jennifer and Troy Stevens exemplified that hope. Two years earlier, at this conference, they d learned that researchers had been unable to identify a mutation behind their toddler Gavin s blindness. Now they know the name of their gene: NMNAT1. I ll return to their story.

The star of the 2010 conference had been 10-year-old Corey Haas and an energetic young sheepdog, both cured of LCA with gene therapy. This weekend, the stars were the new programs and technologies that would allow other families to join Corey s and not just those with blindness.

The rare disease community in the US collectively belies its name: at least 30 million people suffer from 7,000+ diseases, many so rare that they hover beneath the radar of big pharma. But maybe not for long, thanks to the following recent reasons to cheer:

#1: GENE THERAPY PENDING APPROVAL

On July 20, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced impending first approval of a gene therapy in the western world.

It s for lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD). The enzyme normally breaks down tiny triglyceride-packed globules called chylomicrons, and its absence causes episodes of very painful pancreatitis that can be fatal. LPLD is an ultra-rare disease, striking 1-2 people per million. And the only treatment is a diet so low in fat that most patients can t stick to it.

The gene therapy, Glybera, consists of adeno-associated virus type 1 delivering an overactive variant of the LPL gene, injected into a leg muscle during a single day. But not many people have had it.

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

The research team, led by Daniel Gaudet, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, with colleagues from Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (recently replaced by privately-held UniQure), reported a two-year follow-up of 14 adult patients receiving 100 billion to 1 trillion viruses. And it seems to have worked, depending upon how one assesses success.

The triglycerides dropped, but after 60 days they trended back up. The primary endpoint had failed, but the secondary endpoint was recurring episodes of pancreatitis and they found a statistically significant, or close to it, decrease, explained James Wilson, MD, PhD, editor-in-chief of Human Gene Therapy and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who developed the vector. Tracking a few more patients, work not yet published, may have led the EMA s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use to finally recommend approval, after three rejections.

Tomas Salmonson, MD, acting chair of the committee, points to the new data as well as restricting use to the sickest patients in pushing the gene therapy forward. Our established ways of assessing the benefits and risks of Glybera were challenged by the extreme rarity of the condition and also by uncertainties associated with data provided.

For the additional study, the researchers looked at what was happening in the chylomicrons in the blood, and found that triglyceride level can fluctuate, contrary to assumptions of steady change. And that means something is happening that might explain the decrease in the painful episodes a very real measurement. Summed up Jean Bennett, MD, PhD, leader of one of the LCA2 clinical trials at Penn, It s a huge vote of confidence for the entire field of gene transfer.

Dr. Wilson agrees. The repercussions won t be at the FDA, where scientists make decisions based on data, he said, but on the willingness of big pharma to invest in gene therapy. Despite recent successes LCA2, hemophilia, adrenoleukodystrophy ? the pharmaceutical industry has been hesitant to fund gene therapy because it has lacked an approval. So-called regulatory uncertainty has been the biggest problem, and if there s no precedent, they can continue to say no. Biopharma is not interested in the ultra orphans. But I have a feeling we ll be seeing some activity, he added.

#2: FINDING HOMES FOR STALLED DRUGS

By August 14, researchers can submit pre-applications to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules program. The idea is simple yet brilliant: match compounds that are languishing on company shelves to diseases with newly-discovered mechanisms. Such candidate drugs have passed initial safety tests but were dropped for business reasons, such as a tiny market, or because they didn t treat what they were intended to.

Corey Haas and Hannah Sames are ambassadors for the rare disease community, here signing their photos in The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It. Corey has LCA2, successfully treated with gene therapy, and Hannah, awaiting hers, is one of 54 people in the world who has giant axonal neuropathy. (Sandy Andersen)

Since the announcement in June, eight industry leaders have signed on, offering an initial 58 compounds to find new therapeutic homes. And the need is compelling: of the 4,500+ diseases with recently-revealed mechanisms, only about 250 have treatments. If researchers funded through this effort can demonstrate new uses for the compounds, they could significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to get a treatment to patients in need, said Kathy L. Hudson, PhD, NCATS acting deputy director.

Everyone wins.

#3: SPEEDING FDA APPROVAL

On July 9, President Obama signed into law the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, which updates the 1983 Orphan Drug Act. The new law provides $6 billion over the next 5 years to assist the agency in evaluating new drugs and medical devices. The Act will speed access to new treatments and development of especially promising ones, and the Humanitarian Use Devices program will target those that treat rare diseases, giving priority to diseases of children. Treatments are desperately needed because most are serious, many are life-threatening, and about two-thirds of the patients are children, said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), which was critical in developing both acts.

The Act may be a lifesaver for people such as 8-year-old Hannah Sames, one of 54 people in the world known to have giant axonal neuropathy. The gene therapy trial that she will take part in is nearing phase 1, but the sponsoring not-for-profit, Hannah s Hope Fund, is about to run out of money.

#4: EASING INSURANCE ACCESS

When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act on June 28, I scrolled through the relieved statements from various rare disease organizations. Thanks to the ACA, children like Hannah Sames and Gavin Stevens will not be penalized for their pre-existing conditions, nor face annual or lifetime insurance caps.

#5: IDENTIFYING DISEASE GENES

Exome sequencing can identify mutations when single-gene tests don t. The strategy sequences the protein-encoding part of the human genome in individuals, usually young children, whose syndrome has evaded recognition, searching for mutations passed silently from parents, with functions that could explain the symptoms. Once that s known, researchers can develop new treatments, or repurpose existing ones.

New exome-derived discoveries are being reported nearly weekly, some appearing in the media before the technical papers are published. A recent news release about a 4-year-old named Maya with a neurological disease, for example, made its way into many news reports and blogs, with a touching story and accolades. Yet none named the gene or its precise function the part I m most interested in.

In contrast to the incomplete Maya story, when John Chiang, PhD, director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon told me he d discovered Gavin Stevens mutation among nearly 2,500 gene variants in the blind boy s exome, he asked that I not report it. That was 8 months ago the mutation is unveiled in a quartet of papers in the current Nature Genetics, after something of a turf war among four research groups.

Gavin s parents had heard about Dr. Chiang at the Foundation for Retinal Research meeting two years ago, where Jennifer had called him, distraught, after learning that single-gene tests couldn t explain their son s blindness. Dr. Chiang, who described his skill as I do the dirty work, I find the mutations, had helped several families after existing tests had fruitlessly, but expensively, probed the most common parts of only the most common genes. Dr. Chiang had first developed larger gene testing panels, and when those still didn t identify some families mutations, quietly sent their DNA off to the Beijing Genome Institute for whole exome sequencing.

Now that exome sequencing is commercially available in the U.S., Dr. Chiang cautions that it still doesn t help all families, and that costs can greatly exceed the oft-mentioned $1,000 pricetag when considering analysis. I would only recommend it as the last resort when all known genes are ruled out, he advised.

CODA

Karen Poulakos has Leber congenital amaurosis, and does quite well in her world of shadows. Gene therapy may return the vision that she remembers from her childhood. (Ricki Lewis)

On Saturday at the retinal research conference last weekend, I watched Jennifer and Troy beam as Eric Pierce, MD, PhD, director of the Ocular Genomics Institute in Boston and co-author of one of the Nature Genetics papers, talked about their mutation. Discovery of the gene, which affects cellular energy (NAD synthesis), is a starting point for gene therapy, and this particular candidate is a great target. The gene is small, and encodes an enzyme, said Dr. Pierce.

The next day, as my talk about the history of gene therapy wound down, I took stock of my audience. Two young women with canes sat in the front row. A few rows back sat Karen Poulakos, also with a cane, whom I d chatted with earlier.

Karen has Corey s disease, LCA2, but, at age 63, had been deemed too old for the gene therapy clinical trial two years ago. But things had changed, she d learned at the meeting, and she just might be eligible for the phase 3 trial coming up. Karen has lived a full life in her world of shadows, barely remembering when she could see better, and she s now contemplating what it might be like to see again.

As I collected my things, I marveled at the hope radiating from the faces in the room, sighted as well as not. And I thought that this is science at its very best. This is what it is all about, the molecules, the mice, the deciphering of nature s mechanisms: helping people.

Tips And Tricks For Home Improvement Projects ... - Energy Efficiency

No matter what you are wanting to do, if you know how it is done, you will be a success. This is especially true with home improvement projects. There are many home improvements you can do yourself if you have the right advice. These tips can help you before you start.

Examine bids for your project carefully. Take note of those that are presented upon letterhead and those that are presented on plain paper. If the business is professional and trustworthy they will be more likely to give you an estimate on a company letterhead. Of course, you still need to do other research, but dealing only with companies that use professional letterhead is a good start.

Put nail holes in your paint can rim. The channel that the lid fits into on metal paint cans typically fills up with paint and when you try to replace the lid the pain spills over onto the sides of the can. Using a nail, poke holes around the top of the can to allow the paint to drain into the can.

When you are doing your next project, make a place where your garbage can go. Proper disposal of construction trash can be expensive, so making arrangements before you begin is essential to finishing your project on schedule.

When employing a contractor for your project, it?s important to maintain your own records. Don?t assume that your contractor will maintain proper records. Keep copies of every invoice or contract relating to the project. Then you and the contractor can just focus on completing the project.

Take into consideration the look and feeling of other homes in your neighborhood, and try to keep that in mind as you are planning improvements. Will your home
look substantially different? If it will be quite different, think about whether or not this is really what you want. Aesthetically pleasing changes are more desirable than abnormal ones.

Make sure you include everything in your budget. Unexpected expenses quickly start adding up, and your mistakes can cost you by throwing your budget off track. Make sure you have enough money to cover additional expenses, such as having to buy different flooring that is more expensive than your original choice.

When picking contractors, be sure you get several estimates that are each based on the same work requirements. Clearly list everything that needs to be fixed, and keep that list the same for all contractors. If you give each contractor a different list, you will have no way of determining which one is offering you the best value.

New carpeting can make a huge difference to the ambiance of your home. Compare different colors, styles and types of carpet to find that one that fits your home best. Most stores will have carpet samples that they give freely so that you can test them out in your own home.

Add flair and function to the entrance of your home. You can include mirrors, trays and a bench for boots or shoes to incorporate practical materials in your entryway. Adding a few of these items can greatly enhance your home?s organization.

Try looking at YouTube videos of the project you want to tackle. When searching, be very specific, including model numbers and your specific project. Other home project fans, as well as professional handymen and contractors, are more than happy to provide solutions to just about any home improvement problem. You can use their advice to make your own project safer and more successful.

Home improvements are easy and anyone can do them. This does not mean that you can jump in without the right information. With the advice in the article above, you should be better prepared to meet your goal. Best of luck to you!

B.J. Penn, Invicta FC and Rousimar Palhares: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.28.12

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garning all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6!? Wahoo!).? But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs,?and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it?in one place for you to read.? You're welcome.

  • B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald have signed up for the more stringent Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing ahead of their UFC 152 meeting.? Remember: athletic commissions already screen fighters for banned substances, so what Penn and MacDonald?are doing goes above and beyond what's required.? Bravo, guys.

Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural.? On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.

?

  • The Invicta Fighting Championships weigh-ins were last night, and?everything is?a?"go" for the all-female MMA card tonight?(broadcast for free on their site).? If you tune in, keep an eye on the main event, which features veteran submission specialist Shayna Baszler (who trains under Josh Barnett and once won a bout with a Twister, which is cool beans) taking on undefeated rising star Sara McMann (who won the Silver Medal in Freestyle wrestling in the 2004 Summer Olympics).? Because of her credentials, comparisons have been made between McMann and Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey - who took the Bronze Medal in judo in the 2008 Summer Olympics - but I say McMann needs a bit more seasoning.? Watch and judge for yourself, though.? I mean, who the heck am I?

?

  • Rousimar Palhares, a.k.a. "Toquinho", a.k.a. "that crazy guy who tears off legs and?will someday go?bonkers in the Octagon and have a psychotic break", won't require surgery for that knee injury that forced him out of his UFC 150 bout against Yushin Okami.? Tatame was kind enough to write something in English about it, so props to them.?

?

That's it for now.? If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see.? Follow or don't.? It doesn't matter to me.? I'm used to talking to myself.

German doctors to resume talks over Ukraine ex-PM

BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's renowned Charite hospital says three of its senior doctors will fly to Ukraine on Monday to resume talks about the treatment of the country's jailed former prime minister.

Yulia Tymoshenko was sentenced last year to seven years in prison for abuse of office while negotiating a natural gas contract with Russia in 2009.

She is currently receiving treatment for a spinal condition at a closely guarded hospital ward in the eastern city of Kharkiv.

Doctors from Berlin's Charite hospital have repeatedly visited her amid concerns that she isn't getting the proper treatment and is suffering allergic reactions to medication.

The hospital said in a statement Friday that its doctors will meet with Ukrainian physicians to again offer their assistance and resolve differences about how to proceed with her treatment.

How to Do Ecommerce Web Hosting? | My Best Web Hosting

Every online business owner needs to know that the ecommerce website has to be a commerce friendly site. This will help in ensuring success in the business venture, especially for those who are first timers in an online business. Technical requirements of the business can be best handled by the website hosting company which should be trustworthy and reliable enough.

When the company provides its services you are able to concentrate on all business aspects right from ground up and enjoy the freedom and time offered by the web hosting company. It is only such a company for website hosting that is able to meet the unique ecommerce needs. For businesses on the internet it offers specific plans.

Identifying a Trustworthy Platform
For those creating websites for ecommerce something more is required as compared to what is provided by the hosting packages in standard form, by the web hosting company. Those keen on setting up an online shop will require a platform that is secure enough which customers and you, both can trust, a license for the software a building program in the storefront, support services at the highest level for handling different kinds of issues that could arise at the time of running the business.

Q. Class C IP Address the Keyfactor in SEO Hosting

Class C IP Address brings an extra edge to traditional ways of web hosting. SEO hosting services are the transformation of age old hosting services that soared up with the power and potential of C Class IP Addresses.1. Class C of an IP defines, the third segment of an IP address and webmasters want unique IPs, to get a better holdon the online market.2. Syria rebels brace for decisive battle in Aleppo

Rebel forces were bracing Friday for a decisive "mother of all" battles in Aleppo, as Washington warned the Syrian army could be preparing to carry out a massacre in the country's second city.

The Syrian army has been sending waves of reinforcements towards the northern city, and a security source told AFP the offensive feared by the rebels could come as early as Friday.

"The special forces were deployed on Wednesday and Thursday on the edges of the city, and more troops have arrived to take part in a generalised counter-offensive on Friday or Saturday," the security source said of Aleppo.

Fighting raged in Aleppo on Thursday as clashes also shook parts of Damascus and other areas, with at least 121 people reported killed -- 64 civilians, 32 regime troops and 25 rebels.

Rebels fighting to topple President Bashar al-Assad's regime also brought in reinforcements, with the source estimating that between 1,500 and 2,000 opposition fighters had arrived from outside Syria's most populous city to reinforce some 2,000 already fighting inside Aleppo.

"They are mainly present in the southern and eastern suburbs of the city, mainly Salaheddin and nearby districts," he said.

The airport was cut off from the city, as four of the five roads leading to it were under rebel control, he added.

Rebels also said a regime assault appeared imminent.

"The army's reinforcements have arrived in Aleppo," Colonel Abdel Jabbar al-Okaidi, a spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), told AFP via Skype.

"We expect a major offensive at any time, specifically on areas across the southern belt, from east to west."

Okaidi added that some 100 tanks and a large number of military vehicles had arrived in the country's commercial hub.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that regime forces pounded the Salaheddin neighbourhood in the south and Jazamati in the east.

On July 20 the rebels launched an all-out assault to overrun Aleppo, a move analysts say is aimed at establishing a bastion close to the rebel military headquarters in neighbouring Turkey.

The newspaper Al-Watan, which is close to the regime, led on Thursday with the headline "Aleppo, the mother of all battles," adding that "the army continues to chase terrorists in the outskirts of Damascus and the province".

Citing an Arab diplomatic source, it added: "Aleppo will be the last battle waged by the Syrian army to crush the terrorists and after that Syria will emerge from the crisis."

Washington warned that the Syrian regime may be preparing to carry out a massacre in the city.

"This is the concern, that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

"Our hearts are with the people of Aleppo. And again, this is another desperate attempt by a regime that is going down to try to maintain control, and we are greatly concerned about what they are capable of in Aleppo."

But she stuck to the US position of only providing non-lethal assistance to the opposition rebels who have been fighting for 16 months to topple Assad.

"We do not believe that pouring more fuel on this fire is going to save lives. We are working in non-lethal ways. We are working to support the Syrian opposition," the spokeswoman told journalists.

As UN heritage agency UNESCO called for forces fighting in Syria to avoid damaging cultural sites, in particular in world heritage site Aleppo, UN chief peacekeeper Herve Ladsous said there was "no plan B".

"There is one political process for the time being, that is the six-point plan of the joint special envoy Kofi Annan," he told reporters in Damascus.

"And as you know, and has been said time and again, there is no plan B. There is no alternative to that."

Annan's plan called for an inclusive political process, a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, release of detainees, freedom of movement for journalists and peaceful demonstrations to be allowed.

"Syrians killing Syrians is something that should not continue," Ladsous added.

Clashes also erupted in and around southern Damascus, with five children among 16 people killed when a village outside the capital was shelled while fighting rocked the Yarmuk Palestinian refugee camp, the Observatory and witnesses said.

Regime helicopters also strafed targets in Al-Hajar Al-Aswad neighbourhood, activists and residents said.

"Last night was quiet but people woke up to the sound of explosions and shelling from seven o'clock in the morning," an activist calling himself Abu Qais al-Shami told AFP.

After a week of heavy clashes, activists say regime forces have largely regained control of Damascus, with just a few pockets of resistance remaining.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Thursday Assad's regime was bound to fall.

"I'm confident that sooner or later, Bashar will fall," he said at a Warsaw news conference, describing the actions of the regime as "abominable behaviour".

Meanwhile, Israel on Thursday boosted security along its ceasefire line with Syria in the occupied Golan Heights, an Israeli source said on condition of anonymity.

Syria's foreign ministry confirmed the defection of three diplomats, but downplayed their importance and indirectly accused Qatar -- where they reportedly fled -- of encouraging "national division".

It named them as Lamia Hariri, charge d'affaires in Cyprus, her husband Abdel Latif al-Dabbagh, ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, and Mohammed Tahsin al-Fakir, security attache in Oman.

A European Commission aid expert said on Thursday the humanitarian situation in Syria had taken a dramatic turn for the worse.

"It's like running behind a train that constantly keeps accelerating," said the official, adding that more funds were needed to assist refugees fleeing to neighbouring Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

Tens of thousands of people have fled Syria to escape the violence which the Observatory says has killed more than 19,000 people since mid-March 2011.

An alcoholic and drug addict begin to place their lives in peril as they continue to develop the habit of substance abuse over a period. They may lose their minds if they continue to be addicted and this causes a lot of problems for the family and friends. The addict will continue to use substances, as he is incapable of handling his financial problems, loneliness or depression. They begin to depend on the substance for relief and expect to get help when in actuality they only worsen the condition. They begin to get steadily ill and may find themselves in near fatal conditions.

It is advisable for a close friend or family member to take note and admit the patient into drug rehabilitation centers before it is too late. They will get the right medical treatment to try to curb the obsession and help the patient to recover from the addiction. Most of these drug rehabilitation centers use a holistic approach by providing support and care to the patients. The patient should be able to seek help from a rehab center where they will benefit with reliable care and medical treatment. Experienced professionals work at these centers to help hapless victims of substance abuse to get over their dependency on the substance. Make sure that the treatment center that you approach is a reliable and reputed one with licensed practitioners who will provide quality service and state of the art medical treatment. U.S. to let Myanmar import ban expire, at least temporarily

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. ban on imports from Myanmar was set to expire, at least temporarily, at the end of September because of a clash between lawmakers over funding for an African trade provision.

The two issues are tied together in a bill that has the backing of the Obama administration and that lawmakers hope to pass before their month long August recess.

The White House has eased some sanctions on Myanmar, also known by its colonial name of Burma, in response to economic and political reforms. It does not favor lifting the import ban yet.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell proposed separating the two measures so the ban on imports from Myanmar could be renewed.

But Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, objected on the grounds that it would jeopardize approval of the African trade measure, which he said was vital to clothing industry jobs on the continent.

He rejected McConnell's charge that Democrats were turning renewal of sanctions on Myanmar "into a partisan issue" after years of strong support from both parties.

Baucus said he hoped to worked with Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, in coming days to address his concerns about funding for the African trade provision.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, first passed by Congress in 2000, allows eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa to ship thousands of goods to the United States without paying import duties.

A provision that expires September 30 waives duties on clothing from most African Growth and Opportunity Act countries, even if the yarn or fabric is made in a "third country" like China, South Korea or Vietnam.

Coburn has objected to the use of U.S. Customs Service user fees spread out over 10 years to pay for the $200 million cost of the trade bill.

Those are the types of provisions that have created a huge mountain of U.S. government debt, he said.

Proof That the iPhone 4 Could Have Been a Sony Product?According to Apple Itself [Apple]

FWD highlights an early iPhone 4 concept design created by Apple's designer Shin Nishibori. China says Bo's wife indicted for homicide: Xinhua

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has indicted Gu Kailai, the wife of deposed Communist Party politician Bo Xilai, for intentional homicide, in the latest development in a political scandal that has shaken the Party's once-in-a-decade succession.

Gu and family employee Zhang Xiaojun will be prosecuted for allegedly poisoning British businessman Neil Heywood over "conflict of economic interests" between the Heywood and Gu, the official Xinhua news agency said citing authorities.

"The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial. Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide," Xinhua said.

It did not give a date for the trial, but a family lawyer told Reuters it was likely to take place on August 7-8.

The announcement comes months before the ruling Communist Party unveils a new top leadership.

Heywood was poisoned after he threatened to expose a plan by a Chinese leader's wife to move money abroad, two sources with knowledge of the police investigation told Reuters in April.

Gu has been in police custody for months on suspicion of committing or arranging Heywood's murder, though no details of the motive or the crime itself had not been publicly released, other than a general comment from Chinese state media that he was killed after a financial dispute.

Bo, the 62-year-old Communist Party chief of Chongqing municipality in southwest China before his dismissal, was widely seen as pushing for a spot in that new leadership until felled by the scandal brought to light by his former police chief, Wang Lijun.

Bo was dismissed from his Chongqing post in March, and was suspended from the party's top ranks in April, when his wife Gu was named as a suspect in the November 2011 murder of Heywood, a long-time friend of the couple whose son had earlier studied in England with the help of Heywood.

Bo is under investigation for violating party discipline, and he could later face investigation for criminal charges.

Since Bo was dismissed in March, he and his wife Gu, formerly a powerful lawyer, have disappeared from public view and have not had a chance to respond publicly to the accusations against them.

The removal of Bo has triggered rifts and uncertainty, disrupting the Communist Party's usually secretive and carefully choreographed process of settling on a new central leadership in the run up to its 18th congress.

Left-wing supporters of the charismatic Bo have defended him as the instigator of a much-needed new path for China, and many of them see him as the blameless victim of a plot.

The 18th Party Congress, scheduled to be held late this year, will appoint that leadership. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao will then step down from their government posts at the National People's Congress in early 2013, when Vice President Xi Jinping is likely to succeed Hu as president.

EYES ON LONDON: A bit of verse, torch on the move

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

WHAT RHYMES WITH 'LONDON'?

AP's Fred Lief in London, surrounded by the approaching Olympics and its attendant pageantry, was inspired to verse:

Well, look at this ? the sun is out

As traffic tries to move about.

Olympic lanes are out in force

While Londoners (now pushed off course)

Want nothing more than one smooth ride

And not deal with a Tube that's tied.

The cost of this for seven years?

Perhaps not blood but sweat and tears.

And always up pops one more snag ?

Consider North Korea's flag.

So keep in mind when all else fails:

These games, in fact, began in Wales.

?Fred Lief ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fredlief

___

THE TORCH APPROACHES ...

Preparations are still under way all around Buckingham Palace for Thursday evening's arrival of the Olympic torch.

Barricades surround the palace and outline the route the torch will travel. The plan is for the runner to enter the gates and hand off to another runner, who will head to Hyde Park.

Guards from the contracted Security Response firm say they've been in place since 1 a.m. and will direct pedestrians until 10 p.m. The streets will be closed at 5 pm in anticipation of the arrival.

There was rehearsal on The Mall, where the theme from "Chariots of Fire" was pumping out of speakers and an announcer was practicing his introduction of Thursday night's runner.

There's still a lot of work to be done, though; most of the flag posts closest to the palace do not yet have their flags.

WANNA BET?

High stakes between Britain and Australia this Olympics.

Britain's Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson and his Australian counterpart, Sports Minister Kate Lundy, have a side bet on which country will win the most the gold medals at the Olympics.

If Britain wins the most golds, former rower Lundy will pilot a scull along the Olympic course at Eton Dorney, dressed in Team Great Britain colors.

If the Australian Olympic team wins more, Robertson has promised to wear an Australian field hockey uniform and dribble a ball around Australia House, the country's official government residence in London.

ARRIVAL OBSERVATIONS

AP Dublin's Shawn Pogatchnik reports in on his trip to an increasingly crowded London:

Traveling into London from Dublin, 400 miles (600 kilometers) or so across the Irish Sea, I can't tell if my travel glass is half full or half empty.

Yes, I've been subject to myriad delays. But I've experienced unexpected and impressive efficiency, too, from the extra staff at every link in the chain.

I've flown Dublin-London routes for 25 years. I've just experienced these firsts:

?The first-ever announcement on a British train that didn't sound like it was being piped in live from Atlantis. Clear, crisp, friendly voice. A bizarre moment.

?An unprecedented display of signs at airport and train stations, all in that London Olympic hot pink. It's going be impossible to get lost in central London.

?My first clean London escalator. They usually look and sound like they haven't been cleaned or oiled since the Blitz. But coming up to the surface at Victoria, I'm dazzled by the gleaming, obviously scoured stainless steel on the steps and walls. Not a blemish of gum or graffiti in sight.

London is looking cleaner and better than ever, dating to my first time living here in 1988.

?Shawn Pogatchnik ? Twitter http://twitter.com/ShawnPogatchnik

___

QUICK CHANGE

There's plenty of activity going on in Green Park near Buckingham Palace, where the Olympic torch is scheduled to pass later Thursday. But it was still a surprise to see a gorgeous model attempting an outfit change in the middle of the park.

Cloaked in a blanket held by a stylist, the 6-foot stunner slipped into a green dress, then followed directions from a photographer to run barefoot through the park. Get a glimpse here: http://bit.ly/Q9WUBU

___

TORCH TALK

Big day for the Olympic torch.

It visits multiple tourist attractions, meets Princes William and Harry, goes to Buckingham Palace and on and on.

It's like Tour de Britain.

SARAJEVO SYMBOLISM

The secretary general of the United Nations took a symbolic run through he former Olympic city of Sarajevo before he comes to London to carry the Olympic torch toward the 2012 games.

Ban Ki-moon carried a torch Thursday morning in the Olympic Stadium in Sarajevo, home to the 1984 Winter Olympics ? and years of war and hard times afterward. Ban ran alongside Sarajevo's marathon runner Islam Djugum, who even during Bosnia's 1992-95 war trained daily ? but only after dark, to avoid snipers.

Ban said he saw in Sarajevo a city that has risen from ashes and ruins and is now pulsing with "real life."

___

WRONG FLAG

It didn't seem to get in the way of the soccer ? for the North Koreans, at least.

North Korea's women's soccer team defeated Colombia 2-0 after the match was delayed for more than an hour over the diciest of diplomatic miscues: the mistaken display, by London Olympic organizers, of the South Korean flag instead of the North Korean one on a jumbo screen overlooking the field.

"If this matter couldn't have been resolved, then I thought going on is nonsense," coach Sin Ui Gun said through an interpreter after the game is Glasgow, Scotland. "We were angry because our players were introduced as if they were from South Korea, which may affect us very greatly as you might know."

Mea culpa, said the London Olympic operation, saying "steps will be taken to ensure this does not happen again."

North Korea and South Korea are bitter rivals who remain technically at war six decades after the 1950-53 Korean war, which ended in a truce.

?Frank Griffiths ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fgriffithsap

___

LATE-NIGHT FIREWORKS

It was a midnight Olympic light show ? unexpected and free ? for residents of London's Stratford section.

A technical rehearsal for the opening ceremony wrapped up past midnight with two full minutes of fireworks early Thursday over Olympic Stadium, a spectacular (if loud) treat for the neighborhood that adjoins Olympic Park. On Stratford's High Street, people making their way home stopped, looked up and oohed and ahhed.

Will it offset the expected gridlock they're girding for in their community? Maybe not. But it was a nice late-night gift for those out and about at the late hour.

?Ted Anthony ? Twitter http://twitter.com/anthonyted

___

FIRE AND EMOTION

The most striking thing about the Olympic torch relay is just how touching it is.

Hundreds of people, many families with young children, got up early Thursday to see the torch as it left the north London district of Camden at 6:50 a.m. The good-natured crowd defied security guards' efforts to corral them behind barriers, mobbing the former English rugby star who was the first torchbearer of the day.

Forget the celebrities and the sports stars and the local heroes carrying the torch. The crowd itself was the star.

It was Day 69 of a 70-day journey across the country that culminates in Friday's opening ceremony. It made me wish I still had a 4-year-old I could pop on my shoulders and say, "Look, Kelly ? there's the torch!" Hundreds of family memories were made today.

?Sheila Norman-Culp ? Twitter http://twitter.com/snormanculp

___

RISE, SHINE

Up and at it early, and it's easy for an American to be fresh at this hour. Why? Because most pubs in London close between 11 p.m. and midnight ? far earlier than we're used to back in the U.S.

That's old news to the locals, but a bit of a bummer to visitors who are just getting warmed up at that hour.

But maybe it's a blessing. With the Olympic torch hitting central London on Thursday and due to pass many landmarks, navigating is going to be tricky and probably best done without a pounding headache.
