Killer behind murder of U.S. military advisors is 'on the run,' says Interior Ministry

An Afghanistan police officer behind the murder of two American service members executed in Kabul Saturday is ?on the run,? officials said.

The country's interior ministry said one of its own employees, a police intelligence officer named Abdul Saboor, is suspected in the killings, according to BBC News.

The man is from the Parwan province, and is being sought by authorities.

?There is a suspect who is an employee of the Interior Ministry. He has been identified. Right now the police are trying to arrest him. He is on the run,? the Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The two unidentified military advisors, a lieutenant colonel and a major, were found dead in their office on Saturday, officials said. They were both shot in the back of the head.

NATO and the British government recalled their international advisers from Afghan ministries in Kabul late Saturday following the killings, The Associated Press reported.

The murders follow days of bloody violence that erupted over the burning of copies of the Koran last week. At least 30 people have been killed in the protests.

Four U.S. soldiers are among the dead, including the advisors. The two other soldiers were killed by an Afghan soldier last week.

The White House has called the burning of the Muslim holy book a mistake, and President Hamid Karzai has asked for calm as the violence continues to flair.

?Now is the time to return to calm and not let our enemies use this situation,? Karzai said.

Seven Americans were also reportedly injured when protesters threw a grenade into at a base in Kunduz in northern Afghanistan, local officials said Sunday, according to Reuters.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force confirmed there was an explosion outside one of its bases in northern Afghanistan, but declined to comment on casualties, the news wire service reported.
