Decorating the Outside of Your Home - Home Improvement ...

by admin on August 31, 2012

There?s a lot of advice dedicated to decorating inside houses and creating a nice interior ? how to choose furniture, how to pick a colour scheme for your walls, how to use accessories to create a ?look?.

But the first impression people get of your home is from the exterior, and that?s also the first thing you see when you come home at the end of a long day at work. So you want it to be an attractive, welcoming site. The most important thing is upkeep. Peeling paint on your house?s walls makes it look shabby and unloved, as do dirty or damaged windows. Keep your front garden tidy as well if you can.

If you think the outside of your house looks a bit boring but you can?t afford a full repaint, it?s easy to liven it up with some potted plants around your front door, particularly brightly coloured ones. Look at ways to brighten up windows as well. If you have a big bay window at the front, put some plants in the windowsill or hang a wind chime from it. Little touches like this will be seen from the outside and can make your house look prettier.
If you can paint parts of the exterior look for ways to make it interesting. Firstly, use a waterproof, durable paint specifically designed for outside. Most people choose pastel, creamy or neutral colours for their walls, as dark colours can make your house look odd and unwelcoming. If you are brave and want to make a design statement you can use a bright colour ? bright blues work well.

You can turn your windows into features by painting the frames in contrasting colours to your walls. For example, if you have a white or creamy walls paint the frames black to make a striking look.

If you really take home design seriously, incorporate your exterior into your interior. For example, for a modern sleek interior (with minimalist furniture and sleek finishings) you don?t want a floral, pastel exterior, so go with black and white and sharp lines.
