Polk Jobless Rate Fell in August | TheLedger.com

LAKELAND | Polk County?s unemployment rate fell in August and the area added more jobs.

Unemployment was at 10.2 percent here last month, down from 12.3 percent the year prior and 10.6 percent in July, according to the state?s workforce agency.

Polk had 2,300 more jobs than it did a year ago, and there was an increase of 2,300 jobs from July.

Florida?s unemployment rate was 8.8 percent in August, falling from 10.5 percent last year and unchanged from July. The state added 77,800 jobs on an annual basis, for a 1.1 percent gain.

Professional and business services industries saw the most annual job growth, followed by health care, leisure and hospitality, and retail businesses. The government sector and construction industry accounted for the heaviest annual job losses.

The U.S. unemployment rate for August, 8.1 percent, was down from 9.1 percent last year and 8.3 percent in July.
